About me

My work is divided into 4 different mediums. Pastel, painting/mixed media, monoprint making and sculpture. The drawing/painting aspects focus on my responses to the subject from life. I love the challenge of the moving figure/horse and trying to capture the essence of the scene in a semi abstract way. I try to convey the essential elements with as little detail as possible. This I find can only be achieved when working from life. I’m not trying to just ‘copy’ what I see rather be selective as to the fundamental parts. I like to use colours as a form of expression rather than just recording them as they appear. I’m very influenced by the Fauve movement and the particular artists I love include Egon Schiele,  Raoul Dufy, Andre Derain, Elizabeth Frink, (sculpture and print making) and Auguste Rodin, (sculpture and watercolour).

The sculpture and monoprint making are very much linked in terms of both subject matter and execution. I love animals and I find clay and monoprint making are my most affective and expressive mediums to portray them. I have recently completed a series of self sculptures having undertaken commissions for sculpture portraits/masks. I am working on a project called, ‘fans’ depicting faces/people at football, or any sporting/musical event

Teaching

Over the last 20 years I have run therapeutic art sessions for adults with autism, learning disabilities, mental heath problems, dementia and other physical/mental health problems which have not only provided me with a regular income but also inspired me in my own artistic endeavours. Many of these adults have displayed a fearless attitude to their work and a sense that there really are ‘no rules’! I probably get more from them than they get from me and this work remains integral to my own development as an artist.
